I am delighted to welcome you to the Orsett Heath Academy website and to share a little insight into life at our new secondary school.Orsett Heath Academy opened its doors to our first cohort in September 2020. During this first year of opening, all of the fundamentals that underpin achievement in a successful school have been established; high expectations, a broad and balanced curriculum, first class teaching by experienced teachers, strong pastoral care, an exceptional extra-curricular offer and a strong sense of community.Orsett Heath Academy is a very exciting development for children in Thurrock as it will provide an additional 1,200 pupil places by 2024. The academy itself is built in close proximity to the Thurrock Rugby Club and Thurrock Harriers Athletics Track; a location which will allow our existing partnerships to strengthen even further and will support the development of a fantastic sports hub in Thurrock, with development pathways for pupils and the wider community at all levels.At Orsett Heath Academy, we have worked hard to ensure we have established an exciting and ambitious ethos of high expectations and achievement, which has been supported with a strong pastoral care system and focus on wellbeing. With this, we aim to ensure that we work with you and your children to prepare our young people to be resilient, capable and responsible citizens of the future.Academically, the school has a strong broad and balanced curriculum with dedicated and committed staff working together to create outstanding opportunities for academic and personal progress. This is shown not only in the classroom, but also in the wide range of out-of-school learning experiences which will continue to develop as the school grows.We have been delighted with the highly positive responses Orsett Heath Academy has received through both pupil and parent voice within the short time the school has been open, and we are committed to continuing to develop the school in partnership to ensure we are providing students with a high quality education. Rewards – Orsett Heath

Orsett Heath Academy aims to encourage and celebrate the success of all its students in all areas of school life, and to ensure that pupil commitment and achievement is acknowledged, rewarded and recorded. We recognise the importance of praise and reward and seek to promote and reinforce our expectations of our pupils at any given and relevant opportunity.Pupils will be rewarded for:Effort and progressAttainmentBehaviourAttendance and punctualityParticipationPositive attitude/enthusiasmRespectful behaviourWe have many different ways of rewarding our pupils, including:Positive SIMS – If an Orsett Heath Academy pupil demonstrates the appropriate behaviours for reward, every teacher can praise those pupils verbally and by assigning them positive Sims.Praise Postcards – If the Sim is for an academic subject, the class teacher is responsible for keeping a tally of the amount received. If the pupils receive five positive sims for that subject, a Department ‘Praise Postcard’ will be sent home. If the positive Sim is for more pastoral/EQ reasons, the tutor will be responsible for keeping a tally of the amount received and for sending home the Tutor Time ‘Praise Postcard.’Pupil Praise Prize Draw  – Each postcard home will also allow the pupil one entry into the ‘Pupil Praise Prize Draw.’ This will be drawn once a half term in the ‘Celebrations Assembly.’Celebrations Assembly – The ‘Celebration Assembly’ will also reward attendance prizes (for the best form, as well as individual pupils), subject prizes (half termly) and the Head teacher’s Award (termly).Other StrategiesAlongside the rewards system, students are routinely recognised in the following other ways, including verbal praise:Verbal praiseCelebration breakfastsAcademic prizes awarded at Presentation EveningCertificatesThe school website and/or social mediaSchool noticeboardsPrivilegesPositive phone calls homePositions of responsibility and leadershipBronze/Silver/Gold ThresholdsStudents will accumulate positive Sims during the school year, which will be recognised through termly reporting to parents, and by being awarded bronze, silver, gold and platinum levels as they reach the appropriate thresholds.Once a student has accumulated enough points for a gold or platinum level, the badge will be presented by the Head of School, who will also write to the student’s parents.
